Default So what is the deal with the "free" chests?

I'm a little bit confused about the free chests in Nightfall. Some people have told me if you open them , then try again before a month has passed, they will take another month, and some have told me it doesn't matter if you try to open them multiple times within the one month timeframe. Personally, I remember clicking on them multiple times and they still reset.

Until now. It's been over a month and nothing, and I'm wondering if I have been resetting it. Can anyone shed some light on this for me, because I could really do with the liquid assets over the weekend.

(Before you ask, the search function is very slow for me, so appologies if this has been asked recently)

They reset every X.

X seems to follow no pattern whatsoever. Come up with a theory, and at least 1 person will be able to disprove it.

x = ¿mission completed? ¿quest completed?

Has anyone looked into either of those possibilities.

Missions/Quests don't influence the free chests. =p

Skuld's got the right of it. There hasn't been a theory yet that everybody can agree too. There always seems to be one person who claims they have a different experience...

My monk has had the chests reset.... either once or never. I'm pretty sure they've never reset for that character. >.> It's not something any knows for sure or can help you with.

I have a bunch of characters----one has been able to open the chests multiple times, another only once.....I tried the 'wait 1 month' and was able to open all but one chest with that toon....so nope, still no idea what the x is.....

These seem to be the popular theories:

1) The chests reset in 30 days plus one day for each time that character has opened the chests. This theory works for some people, or rather for some characters. My few characters follow this pattern.

1a) But then again, some characters could open the chests once and never again after that. This is a mystery no one has been able to solve.

2) The drop quality of chests gets worse for every time that character has opened the chests. Also, for one chest opening session, drops get worse the more chests you have opened. So start from the Torment ones is recommended.

3) If you check to see if a chest has refilled during a month it reloads, the counter is reset and that character has to wait another month from the checking day. This is being tested, I'll know the results 18th June.

The only thing we know for sure is that chest drops degrade the more you open and that the recharge is character based. Other than that - who knows?

Personally I think there are either several different methods and Anet randomly assigns them or there is some element of "random" in the recharge rate. I have ten characters, for every theory that is "proven" I pretty much have one that doesn't follow it, but then I also have some that follow those patterns. There is nothing stopping Anet from having several different recharge algorithms and that would *really* stymie anyone looking for one single algorithm.

Ah well, open the highest level you can first as that is what Anet has told us to do to maximize the drops. Other than that - add your theory to the mix

Default "free chests"

I have 11 characters and I have found that if I wait 2 months between resets, then they reset for all my characters and I dont have to go out and "test" which chars can actually open the damned things. The drops do not seem to depend on how often you have opened the chests, they just get worse after the first time ~ my mesmer ever gets purples and low amounts of gold (has done since she finished her first run) But why complain about that? It's "free" right? except in torment, there should be no dropping of the prize IMO, since it is a hard battle to get there in the first place.

I remember a few months back, it was announced that the chests had been reset. I don't know if I saw that on wiki or elsewhere, but that proves that missions/whatever other rumors have no bearing on chests being reset. They're either on a certain pattern or they're being manually reset, but either way anet is controlling when this happens, not anything we do in game.

I had numerious characters open numerious chests at different times, and it took more than 4 months before they reset, but when they did reset they allowed me to open all Chests again with any char even ones i had opened just a month before. I also noted that i had only opened some of the desolation Chests once (with 1 char) and when i came to open them a second time with a different char they began to yeild only purples. Not that im complaining, all free stuff is good . But it suggests the reduction of drops isnt linked to how many times uve opened a particular Chest (with 1 char or with numerious) so perhaps it links with how many u have opened Account wise within in a certain amount of time.

Yes, thats why Gaile suggested opening the high-end chests first. It's per character though.

The best theory i've heard is the chests reset in 30 days from when you last tried to open them. So if you went nuts and kept checkin a chest every so often you'd never get a reset for that character. Might explain why my main hasn't been able to open them for months. That theory did have some proof behind it too.

The chests definatly get worse everytime though, i'm about to try it now on my Warrior and i'm expecting nothing but Purples.

Ive done some tests on the 30 days since you last touched idea, I belive it is correct.

With my main character I consistently (and purposfully) touched a chest every few days, and I have not had a "reset" with him in many many months now (over 5 I belive).

I have with another character waited, in cycles, more than 30 days between touching them and have gotten a reset without exception like clockwork. As a note with this character, who has had the most "Resets" so far, I am getting almost all purple now.

With another character, I recorded when I got a reset, waited 15 days, touched a chest and got nothing, waited another 15 days, got nothing, waited 35 days, got a reset, and began mirroring the cycle of the above character and have identical results.

As my final test I am, with my main character, going to attempt to get a reset. It has been 2 weeks since I last purposfully touched off any treasure anywhere. If in another 2 weeks (plus a few days for good measure, probably 35 days or so) I am able to get treasure with my main for the first time in months after purposfully touching them every few days, I will be a 100% believer that it simply is a matter of leaving them alone for 30+ days per character and you get a reset, with degrading drops over time.
